Total War in Europe

I bought the 2 titles in the TWiE series and played through each starter and a couple of scenarios in each. The manual says that you can get the combat odds in the form of numbers (5/8 eg) or letters if FOW on (dis/adv).
However when I play The First Blitzkrieg starter, I get nothing. No numbers or letters. Just the sound of battle and the movement of chits - that's it.
I've gone through the settings of both titles and everything seems to match up.
Any ideas why this would happen?

Do you see the odds for the other battles, just not the starter? That seems really odd and makes it hard to guess, if so.
