Tigers on the hunt
I just want to draw your attention on "Tigers on the hunt", released by Matrix Games and live on twitch tonight:

http://www.matrixgames.com/news/190...than.ever.thanks.to.an.entire.set.of.ASL.mods!

I have just started playing my first scenario and although I have never played ASL or SL I am enjoying the game very much so far with more mods and scenarios to come nearly daily.

RE: Tigers on the hunt
It looks good and I am still tempted, but no pbem and casualties are on the half squad, much less detail than Squad Battles and also being based on Squad Leader, those scenarios are not already provided with the game and all that for 10 dollars more than Squad Battles.

Despite that, I am interested in it. I've watched several of the videos.

What they need to do is set up a site and server where people can show up any time and play HTH instead of going through the hassle of connecting to another's computer.

RE: Tigers on the hunt
I played SL/ASL/VASL for years and play-tested most of the early HASL. That said I haven't played it in years. I really wonder how the have got around the copyright laws. I watched the videos and it is so close to the cardboard version.
I will have a hard time convincing my wife to let me buy from Matrix again. Three of the last four games have had undisclosed currency exchange charges added when it posts to my account. They are small amounts but still. and the process getting a refund is very tedious. That said I still want the game Big Grin

RE: Tigers on the hunt
I played Squad Leader as a kid and this is a great game for solo gaming. AI is good/ great and it has an editor to make scenarios and map. This game is inspired by ASL and other older board gaming systems. It's the old full & half squad type
of gaming. If you liked SL or ASL, you will enjoy this title. Very tactical type gaming.

The lack of PBEM or MP stinks, but if you know about the turn phases/ sections of SL or ASL, you know why it can't be done.

I was involved in beta testing and did a few mods to change the look of the base game.

RE: Tigers on the hunt
I think the presentation is just too "oldschool", even for a Indie game.
The fact that JTS games look almost "modern" (for example the UI) compared to Tigers on the hunt tells it all...

I agree with Phil  how are they getting around the copyright laws because it is clearly a rip off of Squad Leader ASL looks like a good game but I dont know I have always wished somebody would come out with a version of Squad Leader|ASL  game where the computer takes care of the book keeping and you can focus on the game and the tactics. That is one of the reasons I stopped playing Squad Leader |ASL the rule book got to be a big as an encyclopedia and you almost had to be a laywer to understand it all that and finding people to play.

Same here Landser, especially finding somebody to play. It was rare to find an opponent and trying to play the scenarios didn't work well when you know what both sides are up to. So, I would end up organizing all my different armies, throw all the city boards and others with a lot of buildings together and go for a giant kill free for all city fight. It was nothing to have Americans fighting, Germans on one block and British on the next. It really got crazy later with more nationalities. There were no allies in those battles.

RE: Tigers on the hunt
What I would like to know about the map editor is if it can create the map boards from SL or would they be considered too big? If it can and then be saved so you could drop it in and rotate it, that would be great. It would be fun to recreate all those SL scenarios I still have in boxes.

PBEM would have to be done by giving the option of playing without the phases like SBs does. It looks to be the only way because of the one side still being able to move after defensive fire. Of course it would change the game play a bit, but would bring more value to the game for those that won't buy it without that feature.

Of course, with the maps, I still think a 2d relief map would be great there as well. I'm wondering though, in SL/ASL, you were able to put units on the roof or in the sewers. Anybody know if that can be done with this game yet?

RE: Tigers on the hunt
I agree with Dennis...SL was far too complicated to be fun...but always wondered what it would be like if/when I mastered the rules (to some extent)...this game has me curious...liked what I saw on the game play videos I watched so far...if I get a window when they put in in sale...gonna drop....
