Smoke help

Another dumb question, no doubt. Sorry. 

Am I missing something/doing something wrong? As far as I can see the way arty works is that I have to have targets spotted by valid spotters who have neither fired nor moved, hence if no one has spotted anything then all my arty will be greyed out. BUT, does this mean that I can't lay smoke too? There are spotters up front and they can see ground that I want to smoke, bt all my arty is greyed out because they can't see any targets. I don't understand. They CAN spot the ground I want to smoke, but it isn't available. Everything remains greyed out even when I click the smoke option.

Forget that. It seems I can still select a greyed out artillery unit in the artillery dialogue and get it to lay smoke. Greyed out doesn't mean unavailable for smoke.
