RE: PUBLIC EVENT LOG
7th September 1944
Mason City

Mason City Globe Gazette reports:
"...Eastern from news: a lul in the fighting, compared to the previous days, has been repored in southern Transilvania. Hungarian sources claim that their armoured units destroyed an isolated Romanian formation south of Turda, while the rest of the force presses on.
Hungarian troops have been seen entering Targu Mures in the late afternoon, however more concerning reports indicate that German soldies advance in the area further south...
The lul comes to a slight surprise - after several days of apparently chaotic combat, Kingdom of Hungary informed today that it officially declared war on Romania for a reason it shifted away from Axis powers. Now the combat in Transilvania might become more than sporadic.

(...)

In other news: Sigmaringen castle appears to be the new home for expelled Vichy officials fleeing from rapid Allied advance in France. According to both Japanese and US sources, the Japanese cargo ship SS Shin'yō Maru was torpedoed and sunk in the Sulu Sea by American submarine USS Paddle while carrying 750 American prisoners of war aboard. It is said great majority of the PoWs perished in the open seas as families demand more information on the incident.

Pravda

Pravda reports:
"Hungarian sources report of serious engagements that occured between them and our new ally Romania in the central Transylvania region. According to the sources in Budapest the combat was fierce and it resulted in further destruction of Romanian units. Witnesses report massive smoke piumes in the town of Ocna Mures on the Mures river with hundred of ragged refugees seeking shelted in neighbouring villages. According to those people, hundred died in Ocna Mures that was first subjected to brutal, tactical bombing by the Hungarian Royal Air Force.

Accordingly, a serious combat took place around Gambas with heavy losses on the both sides.

Romanians are reported to retreat further south, towards the Vulkan passes.

In other news: Soviet STAVKA reports that th Red Army has launched a massive offensive near the Dukla Pass with aim of liberating Slovakia and opening the offensive in the northern Transylvania. Magyar Nemzet

Pravda reports:
"Massive airstrikes are reported against Romanian troops in southern Transylvania, as Hungarian forces continue on their march for victory towards Cluj-Napoca. It seems that Luftwaffe activity intensified recently, what might be a sign of growing German presence in the theatre of operations.
Army sources reported that a considerable Romanian unit surrendered today as important town of Aiud fell back into the hands of their rightful owners.

In other news: an apparent coup d'état in Bulgaria overthrew the government of Konstantin Muraviev after one week in power and replaced it with a government of the Fatherland Front led by Kimon Georgiev. The Fatherland Front is known for its pro-Soviet sympathy and the staged coup does not seem to be a coincidence given the recent armistice between the Bulgaria and USSR. Royal Navy reports that german submarine U-484 was depth charged and sunk northwest of Ireland by British warships - the corvette HMS Portchester Castle and the frigate HMS Helmsdale. This day is not considered successful for the Kriegsmarine, as another submarine U-865 is considered lost to unknown causes after leaving Trondheim in occupied Norway. Meanwhile, Miss District of Columbia Venus Ramey was crowned Miss America 1944.

RE: PUBLIC EVENT LOG
10th September 1944

BBC London reports:
"Heavy combat has resumed in northern Transilvania today, as reportedly mostly freshly committed German elements attempted a breakthrough on Romanian positions near the Marusza River. Romanian troops are reported to flee southwards and piles of smoke rise from local towns that were the focal points of the Allied advance.
Independent observers do not cease to ask: where are the Soviets? Are they even there?

(...)

In other news: a major attack by the Royal Air Force occured in Kaafjord in northern Norway today, as the aircraft targetted the recently discovered Kriegsmarine battleship Tirpitz. British navigators report heavy damage to the jewel of German naval effort (...) Lead elements of the 3rd US Armoured Division secured St. Vihn in Belgium - the last town before the pre-1939 German frontier. Thus the Allied units indeed stand at the doorway to the heart of III Reich (...) People of Luxemburg celebrate the liberation of their homeland that was occupied for exactly four and half years (...) Turkish military authorities report that two U-Boats have been scutled near Istambul today as what seems a German effort to avoid capture of the said submarines by the advancing Red Army.
