CSVN Portage--What & Where?

I am in the middle of reading the CSVN manual and under the section 2.2.8 Unit Handbook, on page 56  it states:  "Portage: This unit is capable of portaging".

Can someone please offer an example of what type of unit this would be and in what kind of game situation(s) might we run across this type of unit?

On the off chance you designed a scenario that used either rafts or boats, the portage option will allow you to use an infantry unit to move those boats or rafts to a water edge and cross a body of water.
