RE: S42' Campaign Strategy
Well, as I am playing Scar right now as the Soviets, I noe know his cunning plan!!!
I do agree with Scar about the Germans in S42 as I have been recently trounced in the campaign as the German. Particularly in that the 376th 44th, and 384th German Infantry divisions should be withdrawn to the east side of the Don. As the German, I tried to withdraw them southwest and they were run down in the open and slaughtered.
Once I lost those three divisions, as Scar implies, the game is difficult for the Stalingrad pocket as without them, 6th Army (in my case) was no longer able to defend itself and I was forced to resign.
From my experience after being throughly humiliated as the German (by Brammer, I might add), I would also advise that once you make a decision, make it and execute it. I withdrew a panzer division and the 100th Jaeger from Stalingrad and put them in deep reserve east of Kalach. by the time I got around to deciding to move them west of the Don it was too late--they were cut to ribbons in the open by soviet mobile forces.
I also agree with Scar in that (from our experience) if the German can get a mobile battle going southwest of Stalingrad with intact divisions, he has a good chance of crippling the Soviet southern pincer.
Over all, while one might think that Stalingrad is a game with few options for the Germans, I think the opposite is true. The German has powerfull forces at his disposal, and must decide to stand, withdraw, and counterattack as he sees fit. For my money--and this is just me talking--I find the Stalingrad campaign game the best HPS has to offer.
