RE: SMOKE
When I first used smoke during an assault, I put down the smoke rounds and advanced my men across the path I was hoping to block with smoke, not realizing that it takes a while before the smoke develops into an effective white cloud. Needless to say, my men had some trouble.
Now I lay down smoke one turn in advance of when I want to use it, to ensure it's there. But does anyone know how long it actually takes for smoke to develop fully after the rounds land? Depends on the weather, too, I guess.
Another dumb mistake I did once was to leave the smoke visuals turned off, or at a minimum. I kept launching smoke rounds with mortars, and since it was dry and clear with no breeze, I couldn't understand why my smoke never appeared. Well, it was there, I just wasn't seeing it because I had the option turned off, so this changed my strategy for the worse. Not sure what this might be equivalent to on a real battlefield...having dirty glasses?
