General Clauswitz looked at the destruction all around him, at the dead bodies lying all over the place and the thoughts that went through his mind were not printable. How could Hitler and the High Command allow this to happen, how could they insist on this sacrifice of Germanys finest men, women and children and for what. What noble cause had been undertaken, nothing , there was none was the only word for it, Germany lay in ruins.
The General at once got on his radio and cancelled all movement towards the Soviet lines. He Instructed his men that anyone who could make it to the American lines was free to do so.The rest were to cease fire as he would try to negotiate the surrender of the remainder of his division.
A white flag was raised above his Kublewagen and he drove slowly into the smoke pouring over the battlefield from the burning vehicles, not a shot was fired the was just a deathly silence.
This had been the First and last Stand of this Division, they had done their duty to the end.
