As a fact, most of the minor nations that fought alongside the US and Britian in the later stages of WW2 fought very well.
That proves General Slim was correct when he said something like; 'there are no bad Regiments, just bad officers'. Given good officers and good equipment, the Italians fought well under the allied umbrella. The Poles were excellent in Italy.
In WW1, 12% of the American Army in France was Italian. Earning their citizenship the traditional way. They fought very well, much better then their brothers and cousins in Italian uniform. So it cannot be the nationality that sets combat performance.
