But then again, most people would probably save and load the turn if that happens to them (hence the reason why I like to play some small scenarios with no PBEM saves), which is the same thing that would happen if there were complex ambush rules in place.

Either this is a sad indictment on humanity or you're just an old cynic. :P

I prefer huge campaigns so saves on are pretty much mandatory. It just means I have to be careful choosing my opponents.
