Forgotten WWII-Era American Fighter Plane Found on Beach in Wales

My wife took me to the Evergreen Aviation Museum for our wedding anniversary last week, and there is a P-38 on display there. I had no idea it was such a rare plane, with so few still in existence.

Never having served and now being a bog standard middle-class denizen of suburban America, with a desk job, I’m always in awe standing next to such machinery. My experience of scale is thrown for a loop by the size, and contemplating the complexity of handling it much less trying to shoot things while others are shooting at me leaves me at a loss for words.
