The best time to start your own business is while working a good job. Good jobs don't leave you too stressed to find your own niche.
I have been looking at the blogging game. I get my checks every 3 months. It can get a little rough along about week 10.
So I need something that I can more or less play at that will give a little monthly check. Beer and gas type money.
The blogging thing takes an hour or so per day for the first 6 months or so, then maybe half that for the next 6 months. Then it shouldn't take more then 10 minutes a day or so. No money at first, but if you keep it up and get people to participate, it can get up into the thousands per month range. Not a living wage for sure, but a nice little bonus and a fall back if unemployed. Plus having a blog makes finding a job easier, or so I've been told. It's networking on a global basis.
