Historically they were used by Russians through the war, successfully even against Tigers by shooting through the vision slots, mediums were penetrated by shooting dozens of shots at a single spot.

Game wise you can immobilize any tank with AT rifle, take plenty of side shots and at some point you'll snap the track or break a wheel. Also they can destroy mgs, radios, toolboxes etc. .... not sure how SPWW2 works but WaW and H2H has these possibilities. AT rifle also has HE which is quite effective against infantry, it's like a 14,5mm sniper rifle.
