It seemed logical that the early campaigns would be easier and give more room for a new guy to learn, considering I'll play axis (at least first time around).

Don't assume, just because the Germans did better in the earlier war, that the earlier-war games are easier. The goalposts are set pretty far back for the Germans. In other words, it isn't a question of whether you beat the Soviets, it a question of how badly and how efficiently you beat them. :chin:
