All these stories have been given the 'thumbs down' by Snopes. I prefer the true story from about ten years ago when the city of Princeton, New Jersey proposed that professional hunters be hired to thin out the deer population, which had become a public nuisance. They were required to hold a public hearing on the proposal. PETA sent a delegation to that meeting, but they didn't make it because their bus hit a deer on the way to it.
