In the Manuals folder of the 1.03 UPDATE installation is a PDF that deals with assaults.

While I know that you are refering to retreating, you can take the directionallity of the retreats in the same form as assaults. Meaning, you can actually "herd" your opponents retreats (or not retreat if you wish) based on your unit(s) positioning.

Page 1, Sample 3: "Guided Assaulted Unit"

Page 2, Sample 1 "Assault against undisrupted units..."

Page 2, Sample 2 "Assault with probable.."

These would be examples of what I mean.

This being the case, having the unit retreat to somewhere you don't want it to is nearly completely in your control. And how well you dominate the battlefield.

In theory, of course.
