In early war scenarios light armour (and bren carriers for that matter) are very powerful units to protect your infantry against surround and capture.

Use these units to support your infantry (either in the same hex or one hex behind). Most early war units have very poor hard attack ratings (except for engineers) and thus cannot disrupt your armour. No disruption means no retreat, no retreat means no capture. If they are in the second line of hexes then they preserve the retreat path for front hex units.

Of course, like many other tactics to defend against SDC, this usage is obviated when the "Extreme Assault" option is on.
