Krak Wrote:I was not questioning your knowledge or maths. You made a statement that was somewhat debateable. I am not trying to contort anything. You -infered- the existance of 8th Army and its subsequent fighting was irrelevant. I only took you to task on it because -on this board- you hold a position of great respect and influence. Maybe you were joking or being flippant. But I don't think you (considering your influence) should make such statements lightly.
I made no such inference, and clarified my position in the second post, and you're repeated attempts to imply it are on the verge of being insulting to me sir.
Krak Wrote:Its only about another 100km from El Alamein to Alexandria. El Alamein was quite a fight and the Axis resistance was very tough. Somehow or another they had enough supply to hold up a well supplied and quite superior numerically 8th Army for a week or so before they collapsed.
And again you demonstrate a clear misunderstanding of the basics of logistics. It is a known fact that the amount of supply used in a defensive operation is a vastly different amount than what would be used in offensive military operations, usually by as many as 3 to 4 orders of magnitude, so the defense by the Axis at Alamein is not any sort of indication as to what they could have done offensively. The attack at Alam Halfa Ridge is a much better example to consider.
Krak Wrote:I don't agree that had the Axis captured Alexandria and/or the delta that they would have been unable to hold it. With the RN gone they could have brought more troops and supplies in by sea. But thats a whole new arguement. I will leave it at that.
I'm not asking you to agree, but if you are going to debate it would be appreciated if you could put forth some evidence to support the position, and not just statements of opinion.
Good Gaming to you.
