Thanks... met a vet the other day who told me he fought in the city of Smolensk in sept 43, but he did not want to tell me with which unit he served. He referred to that particular combat as if it was defining his experience of the war, so I wanted to get an idea of what types of units were involved and the characteristics of the fighting.
