Played the perfect general as well. I think the chief problem with CS is the lack of persistant artillery fire. If infantry time it right they can walk through a barrage unscathed. I think artillery fire should work like smoke and last throughout the turn. Units moving into it would have to take a moral check before making the move.

I don't think mud would be appropriate. These are big hexes with a huge area to cover. If it was to be introduced I think you'd need to look long and hard at the total amount of fire needed to uniformly churn up the terrain to that extent (as well as damage buildings).

In Earl's campaign game we did have the building effect because he'd manually modify the map between rounds.
