The Israeli attack at Abu-Agheila, an important junction in the northern part of the Sinai peninsula approximately 45 km southeast of El Arish, was the most decisive action of the Israeli offensive into the Sinai Desert. The openening attack was taken by the 14th Armored Brigade on the Um-Katef Ridge which led to a plateu dominating all of the eastern approahces to Abu-Agheila. The strategic ridge was defended by the Egyptian 352nd Infantry Battalion attached to the 2nd Infantry Division. Egyptian forces dug-in around the ridge, were supported by T34/85 tanks from the 6th Tank Regiment. At 24:00 hours, Israeli infantry reached their attack positions.
