Volksgrenadiers in CMBB: Just boys and old men?

No VG were not the best infantry units in the German army. For propaganda purposes the regime wanted them presented that way, and a few veteran divisions were redesignated VG to give some color to this. But the bulk of them were green formations made in last year of the war by the wide variety of personnel-gathering expedients detailed in the post above. The result was not all conscripts nor especially veteran formations. It was instead a chaos of wide range centered on "green".

It was nothing like what "guards" meant in the Red army, for instance. Nor what "grenadier" had meant in the Napoleonic era (the picked best company in every battalion pooled for critical tasks). The verbiage used made allusions to such things, but the reality never remotely reflected it.
