I think what I said earlier will work, but you'll have to test to make sure:

Don't end the turn of file1.bte, but save as file2.bte, then save as file1.bte again and end the turn.

You can then study and play around with file2.bte which doesn't have the turn ended.

Logically it makes sense that it should work. That's what you're trying to do right?
