Be prepared for a human opponent to be 100x more clever than the AI, this is the greatest shock when you move from AI to PBEM, also what is considered "gamey" tactics differs from player to player, so if some tactics are a complete "no no" to you it might be worth chatting about that before you play turn 1.
When you post for a game state your ability as it will be no fun to play an expert if you are a newbie, however despite a crushing loss you may find seeing how experts play may bring your own playing ability up to a higher level quicker than playing another newbie, sort of "short term pain for long term gain", that is what happened to me anyway. ;)
