I think you on the right path. The fourth digit being cut off may have something to do with the font in the game engine? Used to be that the third digit in the hex location box in the lower right hand part of the screen got cut off. This occurred on the first large map, (K43? I do not remember it was so long ago).
Anyway, HPS made some adjustment so it worked fine with the 1920x1280 resolution screens that were new back then. My guess is they increased the box size or adjusted the font.
