Greetings to all early war aficionados out there! I have just finished my first serious attempt on a Winter War scenario.
**Higher Ground EF:FB (3 March 1940) sees elements of Finnish 2. Division holding a position at strategic high ground of River Vuoksi heights, against a concentrated push of the Soviet 13th Infantry Army units, determined to create a break out into inner Finland to add pressure to the truce negotiations just begun in Moscow.
In the words of the actual 2nd Division situation report:
"Today we are yet alive, tomorrow we'll be in deep distress, and the day after tomorrow the 2nd Division will no longer exist, unless III Army Corps sends assistance in all manners possible."
EF:FB 1.35 required for Finns receiving the new French Hotchiss 25mm ATG equipment, sent straight into battle, in this scenario as well as at the time in history. ATR and Molotov cocktail units add to the force mix for stopping the streams of enemy tanks approaching the trenches.
For the Red Army player, a motivated Morale 6 fighting force with plenty of early war tanks. T-26s, T-26 Flamethrowers, T-28s... And a formidable artillery train, albeit taking its time a bit in arriving to the scene. Why hurry, with all those tanks around?
The scenario sets Allied Finland against Axis Soviet Union, who in co-belligerence with Nazi Germany had just divided Eastern Europe into spheres of interest in the secret protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Poland has fallen. Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia have succumbed to Soviet military bases.
This was a time when many nations had not yet finally decided their sides on the coming world conflict. Another Forgotten Battle now available and looking for play testers. I have just begun a playtest with John Given - thanks John!
