I think I see the issue - I believe it is a minor bug. When adjacent to an unspotted unit I cannot assault using drag & drop (as I usually do and works fine on spotted units). If I use your method, select assaulting unit(s) and right click target, the assault goes in.

Unless I'm missing something I think this is a bug that should be corrected - but at least I now have a workaround to save my virtual Panzer Grenadiers - thanks!
