War in the Pacific Admirals Edition by Matrix games, you might find a AAR on youtube, War in the Pacific The Rising Sun a lotta vids.
Steep learning curve but best game I have ever played.
If interested wait to around Christmas for the half price sale.
Edit, you can speed up the replays to hyper-speed and/or no combat replay only reports.

One day turns night/day, give units their orders, then hit end turn, you have no control over the combat, sit back and watch the results, keep a notepad at hand !!!.
Campaign game will give you years of enjoyment, then switch sides.

I think I will wait for a sale--as you mentioned. That game has been taunting me to play it for some time, but I never really looked into it too closely.
