Gazala was a continuous front only because of the mines. The mines surrounded the Brigade. That is why they were called Brigade Boxes. The box was mutually supporting of itself for the most part. But, not mutually supporting of other boxes.

Alamein was much narrower as Mike mentioned and eventually, more units were added.
