In Napoleonics you either have manual defensive fire on (turns) or off (single phase game)

So for PBEM usually played with it off, I suppose?

In my experience for anything other than very short scenarios PBEM Napoleonics is almost exclusively played turns rather than phases. Even in short scenarios most Napoleonic PBEM's  seem to be played as turns .
