Keep plugging away, maybe you will find a German opponent who can unlock your French forces and from that you may be able to see how it is done seeing it from the other side's POV. 
I'm sure I'm making enormous mistakes, and I'm genuinely glad and relieved to hear that it is possible for the German to succeed.
