Do you use Gridded Terrain mod
I have noticed on some screen shots on various CM sites that people use gridded terrain (which I believe is a mod) - this seriously reveals those little folds of cover in the terrain that otherwise you can spend ages looking for.
Does anyone use this when playing or is it considered 'gamey'. To my mind I wouldn't use it as finding those areas myself where I can approach hidden from view etc is part of the skill of the game. On the other hand if there is widespread use of this mod am I disadvantaging myself.

I use it - to me it's just a quicker way of gathering the same information anyone else could get by panning at eye level. I don't see it as gamey. In real life you would have shadows from trees cast across folds in the land which the game doesn't depict. Actually I use it as much for estimating distances (20m tiles) as for folds in the land.

I dont use it as I think it spoils the look of the game, however I dont consider it to be Gamey, its just like switching the trees off.
Anyway, unless you play at level 1 for the whole game everything else is gamey!

I also gridded terrain for open snow, grass and some desert terrain...don't consider it gamery... still doesn't help me do better...LOL
Interesting comment from Geordie -- come to think of it, I also just about only play at levels 1 or 2... more fun that way.
Very often set tres at max as well -- much more atmospheric.

Right - thats ok then - I may use it on snow where it is more difficult to pick up on the changes - as for level 1 only I sometimes do this when playing vs AI + level 2 if you get in a 2 storey building - it actually makes it quite fun. I also sometimes only watch the playbacks from the Co's point of view. Then anything that happens out of sight you only find out about when giving the next set of orders

I often played solo using Franko's True Combat Rules - must still be on my disk somewhere -, where you play at level 1 and can only rotate view around your units, except level 2 if they are in a 2 stories building or 3 if up in a church... HQs, Arty spotters with binos and tanks with optics can use zoom x 8.
It makes the game very different and gives the AI a chance...
To find your way around, you print or make a pic of the map at game start. Played with small scenarios, I find it challenging and lots of fun.

Where can you get the gridded mod?
...my wife (callsign Whitecave) is playing on a huge gentle slopes snow map, and is finding LOS's very difficult

Go to CMMODS and search for "gridded."

Eltee writes - well I only do that if its a small map QB and the CO has a pretty good line of sight over the map and where necessary I move him around - jeeps/kubels are handy for this.
