it was USSR vrs. USA/UK 86 which leads me to ask are there any tips for playing
the USSR in the 80's
we both got whipped playing as the USSR

Part of playing MBT is learning the OOB's. and what is available. It's not always the biggest that is the baddest. The USSR in the 80's has alot of good equipment.. the trick is to find the strengths, and then try not to butt-heads against you opponent's strengths. but to make him fight against yours..

If you are interested, I'll play russians against you in 1985, and perhaps give you a good run for the money
