Hard to believe you can start a campfire, and I also question the learning value for the boyscouts, with a sniper rifle. Plus my hikers wonder what the grenades were for?
The boyscout motto is "Be prepared". Sniper rifles fall under that category. The grenades were for fishing. Normally they would use the snipers rifle, but they were in a hurry to get the bear hunting lesson done. Fish or bear, between the sniper rifle and the grenades, you have them all covered. Even the fishy bears with red stars on their caps.
Your air strikes happen during your arty phase. So it makes sense that if the fast arty is on, you won't see the airplane in the replay. You should still see anything that it sees during it's pass. Observed units stay visible until they move to another hex.
