DAR Bootie vs Fubar (no peeking Bootie)
Well i've never done a DAR before so forgive if it's a little unpolished.

This is my on going game against Bootie playing the small scenario Meeting At High Altitude as the Syrians, the mission briefing says that my small recon force must secure a walled farm to win the mission. The only intel on my opposition is that they are a mech inf unit of comparable size and that the mission is to be treated as an ME.

My knowledge of modern equipment is very limited so any tips more experienced players have of this gear please feel free to enlighten me. Big Grin

Starting up the mission i find i have a recon platoon which consists of:

2 recon infantry platoons, each platoon is mounted in a pair of BMP-1P(4c)'s

The infantry is armed with small arms and grenades....and that's it!
The BMP-1P are armed with a small calibre smoothbore gun, mg and a AT-4C ATGM.

The map from my side is fairly flat with the walled farm in the centre of the map, there are two gates in the wall facing my side. The map then drops away sharply down hill to Booties side of the map.

The plan is to race forward and dismount the infantry, they are to take up position in the two farm buildings and sit tight. The BMP's are then to back up to the top of some ridges that flank the farm and provide fire support from range with their giant musket and ATGM, which according to the manual has a dead zone of 70m so will need space before being any use, but should be good out to a range of 2500m. Sounds so simple doesn't it.......we'll see.

As my units reach the farm dust becomes visible coming fast up the road.

Things are hot at the beginning of turn two, my first recon platoon comes under fire, from what appears to be a whole platoon of Stryker's, as the infantry dismount. Whilst the infantry take cover and attempt to head for the farm buildings the BMP's open fire with bursts of MG fire, hopefully they will get those smoothbores in action soon!!

Mean while second platoon dismount without incident and make their way inside the compound and their BMP's prepare to reverse into position on the second ridge and cover any move by the US units to flank on my right hand side.

Looking closely it's possible to see the US infantry with their javelins.....possible trouble there if they come into action. Cry

The first platoon continue to seek cover and ignore their orders, their BMP's hold position and shoot up some US Infantry that show themselves over the brow of the ridge.

Mean while second platoon take up firing positions in the farm buildings waiting for something to shoot at.

After watching my units scramble about in the open and watching as one of Booties Stryker's boldly reverses right across the front of my BMP's i can't help but worry about the games TacAI. :conf:

There's little a pathfinding programmer can realistically do about vehicles all a bit too close to each other, I suspect. Movement orders will alwyas be a bit of an art.....

Good start! Wonder why the 30mm didn't open up?

The Syrians have no AT ability in their infantry?? That sucks. Perhaps that compensates for the position they are given in this scenario?

The Syrian infantry are only light recon troops, i did think maybe i could 'acquire' some RPG's from their IFV's but no joy.....so if they need to tackle those Stryker's they'll need a girded set of loins and a hand grenade. ;)

The BMP crews have only fired one shot each from their smoothbores, they seem to prefer the MG. Maybe with only a crew of two there is a reload delay?

Maybe..? What calibre are the smoothbores? Are they the old 76mm armed BMPs?

McIvan Wrote:Maybe..? What calibre are the smoothbores? Are they the old 76mm armed BMPs?

The BMP 1 is armed with a 73mm smoothbore gun that's not very accurate in windy conditions. LOL

The BMP 2 is armed with a 30 cannon, the same that is used apparently on the Mi-28 attack helo.

RE: DAR Bootie vs Fubar (no peeking Bootie)
More bad news for the US this turn as a lone Stryker crests the ridge and comes under the combined fire of all four BMP's. This turn i used the cover arc, this seemed to speed up their reactions quite a bit but that maybe a fluke. Only the one cover arc order now, no light and hard target arcs. Cry

Stryker!........Stryker!.............Ted Stryker?

Mean while one squad from 1st Platoon rallies and heads for the farm, unfortunately the C2 link for the other squad and their HQ squad have broken down and they cannot receive orders this turn.

So with luck that's one US Stryker and infantry squad damaged or destroyed....three to go.

RE: DAR Bootie vs Fubar (no peeking Bootie)
Two more Strykers push forwards over the hill towards the farm, deliberate orders or TacAI oddness i wonder. Either way, one is knocked out in short order while the other sits there and does nothing!!!

As the crew of the first Stryker bail out my troops open up with small arms fire trying to kill the crew....but they miss as far as i can tell. More time on the practice range for them. :whis:

Watching the replay from another angle i catch a brief glimpse of infantry trying to redeploy to my right flank, in answer to this i bring 2nd Platoons HQ squad up to the roof of their building as they have a sniper rifle that with luck may keep them pinned down.

I may also move one of 2nd Platoons BMP's forward to the reverse slope of the ridge out of Javelin sight, just in case. Eek

cheers
