U.S. Veterans Day

Thanks to all that served in the U.S. Armed Forces as well as our Allied Armed Forces partners and friends on this Veterans Day. I served 30 years in the U.S. Army and retired last year and I thank all that served with me. Victory for ourselves and confusion to the enemy!

8 October 1917 - March, 1918

DULCE ET DECORUM EST - the first words of a Latin saying (taken from an ode by Horace). The words were widely understood and often quoted at the start of the First World War. They mean "It is sweet and right." The full saying ends the poem: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori - it is sweet and right to die for your country. In other words, it is a wonderful and great honour to fight and die for your country.

Although, as you will have understood, he didn't necessarily agree.

Owens Mother received her telegram informing her of his death on the very day, 11 Nov 18, that others were outside celebrating the end of the war.

Owen is described as the most read English author after Shakespeare.

To All my People.Tuesday next, November 11th, is the first anniversary of the Armistice, which stayed the world wide carnage of the four preceding years, and marked the victory of Right and Freedom. I believe that my people in every part of the Empire fervently wish to perpetuate the memory of that Great Deliverance, and of those who laid down their lives to achieve it.
