TOAW questions
Been playing Arracourt to get a handle on the game....is there a game speed setting to slow the game down a little? Did not see anything in the manual. I have been playing the American side and the best I can do is get a draw but usually a German victory is the result. I have yet to lose the objective Arracourt and gain other objectives but I still get a loss. Do you have to hold objectives for a certain length of time before you get credit for them? And finally is there a way to pull up an after action report to see what losses were and/or why you did win/lose a scenario?

1) Speed setting - like you I *think* the answer is no.

2) Victory hexes - points mean prizes, so the more (or less ) you hold at the end of the battle affects your level of victory (or defeat in my case usually !).

3) Losses - after each turn a sitrep file ( I attach one from one of my current battles) is produced and that will show what action took place each turn it will also show % losses for each unit , DURING the battle if you make an assault you can click on the unit icon and it will shall the battle losses in the form of infantry/tanks etc lost for eech side.

As for why you won/lost the battle that is down to your skill :) (or lack of it in my case !)Big Grin

Hope this helps !

RE: TOAW questions
Thanks for the tip on the sitrep file Antoni. Well got my first victory at Arracourt. Previously I had been playing a purely defensive game as the Americans...this time I moved a couple of units in the south to take some German objectives while still defending Arracourt. Even though I was not able to hold those German objectives I came out with a victory. Seems like the game does not promote totally defensive or offensive tatics but a mixture of both. Is this true in all scenarios?

Here's a simple trick - when out start a scenario, check the situation report. That's the magnifying glass icon on the big pallet. On the bottom it will tell you how many VP you have out of how many possible, and what level of victory or defeat this represents.

If you are at an overwhelming defeat, you need to try and get as many VP hexes as possible. If you are at an overwhelming victory, you can just hang on to what you have. If it is somewhere in between, modulate your efforts accordingly. And keep checking this, and the amount of turns left, throughout the scenario. Seriously, this seems simple, but I've lost games where I was doing very well because I was too laid back about grabbing VP hexes.

Tactically, I do find TOAW rewards agressive play, even for the defender. But that's another issue entirely.

I like to think of defense as "attacking in place".

RE: TOAW questions
Sometimes it seems that you can hold in place if you are even or slightly ahead in points and cause enemy casualties, thus increasing your lead.

RE: TOAW questions
Also, on this site, go "downloads", "scenario tools", "TOAW", and download the Victory Level Calculator; you can keep it handy on your desktop, and use it to see how many victory points you need to pick up to attain a certain victory level. But it can only calculate based on victory hexes, so if the scenario awards a lot of points for other things, you'll need to take those into account separately.
