Snipers at Stalingrad

RE: Snipers at Stalingrad
I only vaguely followed all the input so far, but I always like to insert a sniper or two in most any QB. I had an opponent some time ago, and we even had rules to cover having snipers carry over from QB to QB between us....but he suddenly disappeared, and that ended that.

I would just say, I love the idea of having a sniper(s) as more than just a mortar or AT team. Like in Enemy at the Gates.

For better effect, just off the top of my head, I think it should be an Operation...to be able to get a little ''history'' on the snipers in play. But you'd have to limit really heavy action in and around the sniper(s).

I'd love to be involved in this idea as it developes!!

And can maybe give more input later, too......

Good stuff!! :kill:

RE: Snipers at Stalingrad
Sounds like a cool idea that a good company like Activision could take and run with - a FPS where you become a sniper and you see if you can survive over a campaign and kill certain key generals in Stalingrad.

But I doubt if you will be able to make a good sniper scenario in CMBB as the snipers:
A) are very stealthy and won't see each other
B) if they get close enough to see each other (inside 100 meters), they won't shoot at each other, using mostly harmless "defensive fire" with pistols.
C) the scenario would be very boring as the winner would be the guy who sat still the most (as still units spot better).

Snipers only work well in CMBB as support units IMHO...

that's why I'm thinking about an exit scenario where the germans have some generals to exit into safety.
the russians do NOT have enough infantry and have to count on their snipers to eliminate the generals
the russian can work alone or protected by their infantry

when you only give exit points to the generals it could get tense

sure...this won't be everybody's favourite gameplay but still...it could be interesting...

RE: Snipers at Stalingrad
Perhaps try a very small sniper/countersniper set up to see how it goes. Idea is to eliminate the other sides snipers.

RE: Snipers at Stalingrad
This seems like it might be ok but I am afraid there may be a couple problems. I think there a couple of game issues that will frustrate you from producing a usable scenario.
First, the reasons that Der Kuenstler mentioned are all true.

On top of that, it will have to be done on a very small map in order for the snipers to actually ID the HQs units and snipe the individuals that you are having act as the Targets. I think the Russian Infantry company would do a much better job of taking out the targets than the sniper probably will and then your just talking about a standard scenario where the Snipers are support.

Here is an illustration of why counter sniper operations just don't work in CM. This is from a battle that Warhammer11A and I played about a year ago.All we could both do is shake our heads at this. It was kind of.......disturbing.

Bwah-ha-ha - I hope they had time to enjoy a smoke afterwards! But that is exactly what happens when 2 snipers meet up close in cover - they just look at each other and make mostly harmless little pistol sounds, making each other duck. You'd think they'd at least swing those rifles at each other.

RE: Snipers at Stalingrad
Also set the ammo supply for all other squads at low.
That way they dont kill a sniper at 500 meters ;)
It makes life more easy for the snipers too and adds a difficulty factor for the defenders.
