COMBAT FOOTAGE- The City

I decide to bypass Waleed's city with my panzer spearhead and send it plunging eastward into the wheatfields (background) after detaching 3 panzers to conquer the town without waiting for infantry backup, but they prove barely up to the task, they knock out both the defending guns but at a heavy cost; one is destroyed by a grenade and another is immobilised..

This is the one immobd by Waleed's 37mmAA gun..

And this is the one blown apart by his invisible grenade-thrower a few seconds later..

My ZIS-3 crew are blithely pushing their gun into position but fail to notice RT Pioneer's Stuka coming in low..
(Inset- the tracer rips down and wrecks the gun)

My probing 8-wheeler is so intent on peppering Beatguy's AT-gun with 20mm cannon fire that it fails to realise it's under flamethrower attack until the inside temperature suddenly rises alarmingly..

My 8-wheeler pokes its snout into the city centre and is shredded by a burst from Andre's 37mm flak gun..

My leading panzers encounter stiff resistance from Waleed's two guns, I eventually overwhelm them by weight of numbers but not before paying the heavy price of two wrecked panzers..

The guns view, firing in tandem straight down the road into the teeth of the advancing panzer group..

GENERAL NOTES

Like everybody else I've never played the Green Light scenario before, so we're all having to learn as we go along..:)
This is what I've learnt so far-

As RUSSIAN player, I find they're far weaker than I imagined, they usually fire a shot then break and run as soon as they get return fire coming in, there's greens for you. Their guns likewise usually get off one shot, then freak out when jerry starts shooting back.
Best I can hope for is that the Russian infantry will get off a burst of small-arms against unbuttoned panzer and halftrack commanders, or trash a truck or two.

As for the Russian guns, hopefully they'll kill a panzer with their first couple of shots (they rarely get a chance for a third).
Also, if you start pushing a Russian medium gun into position after it arrives as a reinf, be prepared for up to 4 mins setup time, so now I rarely bother pushing them because they probably won't have time to set up before Jerry arrives, I just leave them where they arrive and face them towards his expected route of advance.

As GERMAN player, I've decided not to pussyfoot around and to just hurl everything forward as fast and as deep down the map as possible, they'll fire at the Russians while moving so there's no real reason to stop anyway except to decisively knock out the bunker and gun at the river line, then it's plain sailing..

In fact the river line is a real pain because the road over the bridge and through the woods is too narrow to comfortably take your whole force without horrific traffic snarl-ups (especially if there's a bunker or wrecked AFV half-blocking the road) so you probably need to send portions of your force across the fords which costs valuable time.

I'm finding my major hassle is not the Russians but is the huge amount of careful move plotting required by taking into account different units delay times, speeds and over various surfaces in order to minimise bunching, bouncing and concertina-ing.
In fact Green Light tests our movement plotting skills to their limit, bearing in mind its only a 20-turn game so they can't afford too many foulups or the delay will be real bad.

For example below is the latest screenshot from my game with Bootie, it's already turn 6 and my German rear elements haven't even crossed the bridge yet, but in the distance my lead panzers have penetrated to the centre of the wheatfield!
This is typical in all games, expect your German force to be strung out for miles despite your best efforts to keep it together, unless of course your traffic co-ordination skills are better than mine..:)
