From what I understand the Germans army currently uses the MG3 which is basically a newer version of the MG42 and looks a good deal like it. Variants of the MG3 are licensed for production in other countries. I think Iran is one of them.

I bet they were in a major hurry from whatever position they were in before hand...From what I recollect from my readings, the PZGrenadiers would have a LMG - MG34 attached to the riflemen, the old tactic of using suppressive fire while moving stood strong with them, and that ain't no lie!
