TACTICAL NOTES

Bootie Wrote:Once you get behind schedule on your spear head every flag becomes harder to gain.

Yo, there are still results to come in, but I don't think I'm giving anything away when I say that's why I settled on a strategy of always maintaining the panzers momentum eastwards like bats out of hell on 'fast' in all the games, bypassing the Russian garrisons while detaching just a few tanks, halftracks and infantry to deal with the garrisons, except until I reached the hill where I dropped the 'bypass' strategy because I didn't want to run pell-mell into the Russian tank reinfs that might be coming out of the town.
Below are a selection of screenshots from different games to illustrate my German strategy which turned out to be generally successful-

The River- My leading panzers scream across the bridge straight through the Russian positions without stopping and are already vanishing eastwards into the city in the distance to catch newly-arrived Russ reinfs by surprise before they can properly deploy..
I've held a few tanks, halftracks, inf and SiG back to deal with the Russian River garrison, they can race east themselves later when their job's done here, apart from a few inf squads which I'll leave as a flag guard.

The City- Another game, here the main panzer column completely bypasses the city centre and races eastward to hopefully catch the Russ wheatfield garrison by surprise. Meanwhile I've detached a couple of panzers to assault the city centre but they take hard knocks at the hands of the Russian 57ATG and 37AA guns, one is ko'd and the other is immobd but they take both Russian guns with them. Over the next turn or two another panzer, halftrack and infantry came up to mop up the Russ inf in the city centre.

The Wheatfield- Here again, I keep my main panzer column's momentum going, bypassing the Russian garrison completely while detaching a small force (foreground) to deal with the garrison (note Russian body count)
(Incidentally in all these screenshots many of the bypassing panzers also contributed to each garrisons demise by firing into it on the move)

The Woods- Another game but exactly the same drill.. my panzers race on eastwards while detachments hold back to flush out the Russian garrison before moving up fast to rejoin the spearhead later, apart from the usual stay-behind flag guard squads.

The Hill- At this point in all the games is where I dropped my 'bypass' strategy and adopted a more cautious approach rather than risk running into Russian tanks before I could form into one or two tight panzer fists. By slowly overunning the hilltop garrison on 'hunt' I hoped to meet the Russian armour as it came out of the town and defeat it in a tank battle, leaving the way clear to sweep down into the town unopposed..

The Town- Another game. After defeating the Russian armour, my surviving panzers race down to the Volga. It didn't always go as smoothly as this of course, as often my panzers took a battering in the tank battle or were whittled away by guns and Sturmovik attacks etc and ran out of steam..

RE: GREEN LIGHT TOURNEY
THE RUSSIAN STRATEGY

Some results have still to come in, but the screenshots below give a good idea of how things have gone in the tourney, the shots are from different games when I was Russian, my strategy was simply to put the infantry and guns in cover and try to hold on by their fingertips.
Usually the guns arriving as reinfs had no time to be pushed anywhere before the Germans were on them, so most of the time I just pivoted them to face the expected enemy approach route and left them sitting in the open ready to fire at the first Germans they saw.
My Russ infantry reinfs were usually able to scramble into cover before Jerry arrived, but I ordered them to hide on short arcs and only fire when/if they were spotted, or if they had a good shot at a laden truck etc. But their main task was to lie unseen on 'hide' til the end of the game to keep flags neutral and it worked on quite a few occasions.
But overall the green Russians usually had little chance to survive, breakiing, running and/or surrendering as soon as they began taking fire.
As for the 8 Russian tank reinfs that arrived in the town, they were mostly green and no match for the crack German panzers, so I usually held them back in the town as a last line of defence.

The River- A typical Russian setup, I placed the infantry at the back of the woods shielded by the trees between them and Jerry so they'd last a little longer.
The MG-bunker I placed smack in the middle of the road, it only lasted about 10 seconds of course because it was in full view of the panzers who quickly blasted it to matchwood, but its main purpose was to partially block the road and cause delay which it did even when knocked out, though units can still squeeze past wrecked bunkers/pillboxes with careful move plotting
The Russian 76mm ZIS-3 gun at bottom right usually knocked out at least 1 panzer before quickly being put out of action by return fire.
(Incidentally the circled guy is the Russian inf platoon commander, he quickly discovered his foxhole in the open didn't give him as much protection as he'd hoped)

The City- My Russian infantry have run into buildings but the 2 guns have no time to go anywhere except stand in the open and slug it out with the panzers..

The Wheatfield- Again the Russian infantry scurry into cover while the guns must fight where they stand as the panzers quickly overwhelm the garrison..

The Woods- Plenty of trees here to protect the Russians and help them survive a little longer..
The 2 guns just had time to get into the trees and are now on armour-arcs to stop them wasting shots on infantry and blowing their cover, it's panzers they're after.
The Russ infantry are on 'hide' and short arcs, I just want them to quietly sit out the game without firing so that they'll keep the flag neutral. However they have no choice but to fire to protect themselves when the enemy gets close and spots them..

The Hill- Same as before, most of the Russian garrison (ringed) have had time to scramble into the trees and lie low on 'hide'.

The Town- In most games my usual drill was to leave the Russ infantry and gun near the flag and then either deploy the Russian armour in a linear formation ready to clobber Jerry as he entered the town (top pic), or split the armour into two groups (bottom pic) one to plug the road exit from the woods (left) and the other in linear reserve (right)

RE: GREEN LIGHT TOURNEY
RESULT JUST IN

BEATGUY 47, POS 53 (Draw)

Beatguy hurled a massive panzer attack down the road into the town, and I desperately responded by hurling a plug of armour to block the exit from the woods, resulting in a bitter close-quarter melee of colliding and ramming..

Carnage on both sides as Beatguy's panzers try to kick in the door to the town through a solid mass of Russian armour..

This has been a challenging Tourney, and still in progress, but I wonder if POS has a Fall/Winter tournament in mind yet...? (Something in snow this time??)

(I bet the gears are already turning inside his brain!...) ;)

The following is a compendium of airpower screenshots in chronological order from the tourney.
The yellow arrows indicates the ground tracks of the aircraft (note the a/c shadow at the tip of the arrows)
Note too how in some cases the machines seem to be clobbering their own side, yup it happens..

RE: GREEN LIGHT TOURNEY
SITREP- GAMES STILL IN PROGRESS

With less than 2 weeks to go before the tourney ends at midnight on Sept 30th, these below (in alphabetical order) are the results still to come in.
I know some have had RL issues, others have had PC problems, some haven't even sent the first file yet, and some others went AWOL weeks ago, and others are valiantly carrying on to the end of the road..:)

7Fritzy7
Bertram
Combat Wombat
Cressy58
Feldfebel
Feydarkin
Mugger2006
Odies
Panzer Dan
Red Devil
Waleed
Wigam

If any game doesn't finish by the deadline, it won't be abandoned, it'll simply carry on and finish afterwards, counting for the ladder as usual.
If the AWOLS who jumped ship part-way through their games still haven't returned within a couple of months after the end of the tourney, I'll claim the victory by default as usual, you can run but you can't hide kiddies, we play by grown-up rules here and won't wait for stragglers..;)
