Splitting infantry

Splitting infantry
I always keep my infantry together, ie not splitting them up, when I do battle with my opponent's and meet up they do seem to be in single unit's, the question is are they split or is this how you see your opponent's infantry......Thought about this for a long time

Cheers Ted

RE: Splitting infantry
I for one split some of my infantry units frequently throughout a game/scenario. Once near a suspected possible enemy position, advancing from cover to cover. I will spit one squad to form a scouting party or a cannon fader unit if you will. Rather have a half squad cut dawn by an enemy ambush, then an entire one, etc.

The half squad ordered to move forward is the one with the SMG weapon/weapons and the other half with the light MG will stay put in cover, providing overwatch.
Sometims I will assault an enemy known position, by using the same tactic. Split an entire platoon and advance with the SMG half squads, while my light MG half squads provide covering fire..
This tactic works even better, when other heavier support weapons are available as well.

Not exactly sure what you are asking but in extreme FOW almost all units look just alike until you have been near them for quite a while. It's a good way to make your opponent think you have more infantry in an area than you actually do.

RE: Splitting infantry
Thank you Gentlemen, I think I will have to change my gaming tactic's in future, and make more use of my infantry.

RE: Splitting infantry
Many probably already know this but for any new CM'ers...splitting your infantry during a defensive setup phase is also a good way to increase your number of foxholes.

I used to do that often to give myself good solid fall back positions. It also gives you flexibility when setting up a defense where you might be wrestling with which avenue of approach the attacker will be using.

Okay...back to football and the turkey. :)

Hey Hornet, for placing additional foxholes as fall back positions You have to push alt-F in the start up phase. But it works only if the parameter "dug in with fallbacks" or "dug in including vehicles" is adjusted at the scenario. This for the case You should have overlooked it.
I don´t know how it is in quickbattles. Do You know it?

RE: Splitting infantry
I believe splitting units also causes them to drop one point of morale, which makes them easier to pin etc? Probably not a problem if you have good quality units or good morale HQs.

RE: Splitting infantry
It is gamey and abusive.

Yes the half squads are moderately more brittle, but they suck up enemy ammo with abandon, and the halves not fired at reply completely unsuppressed.

If your opponent routinely splits all his squads just to stress your ammo etc, get a new opponent, he's a shark.

I didn't overlook anything, I just wasn't as specific as I should have been in my post.

I was speaking about quickbattles where you are defending an attack (not assault), or for that matter, scenarios in which the Alt-F option isn't available. I figured everyone knew about the Atl-F command to place additional foxholes since it's a built-in feature that you can find in the manual. I was just talking about splitting squads as a way to gain some additional foxholes in situations where the Alt-F feature is not available to you.

I agree with JasonC in that splitting infantry can be overdone. I've only used it to gain some extra foxholes during setup, then I re-merge my units on turns one or two of the game before the attacker has time to see me.
