F 40 Question for Volcano Man
You realize of course that in your V-2 scenario those French divisions with a defense of 10 with hold up for about 6 hours, at best? I'm thinking Wellington's advice for Militia "Let them hold areas that aren't likely to be attacked." Entrench them in Brussels? Were those divisions really that bad? Jonny Whip

Ed is on holiday this week, so you may not get a quick answer to your question. ;)

RE: F 40 Question for Volcano Man
Greetings from a community Hotel computer. I didn't know there would be such things here but, well, it is 2009 after all.

Anyway, going off the top of my head (as Foul said, I am away so I am unable to look at the OOB), there are NO French infantry that have a defense of 10. As far as I can remember they all have a defense of 16, which is the standard for all infantry. It sounds like you are looking at the motorized / mechanized infantry defense ratings which, as has been said several times before, have a defense of 10 (soft) when they are in T mode only, but 16 when they are deployed.

I could be wrong though; I you probably tested this observation with some playing time rather than just a passing glance at OOB defense ratings, right? If not, then you should try playing it first. ;)

No I'm playing it. O510_01 Maybe it's not yours. The fellow who initiated the game said it was "V-2" so I assumed it was one of yours. J

Sorry, not yours. The fellow who initiated the game with me said "V-2" and I just went with it. In fact it is a stock scenario. J

Ah, OK, that makes sense. "V-2" didn't sound familiar. ;)

If you make reference to this scenario: 0510_01: Fall Gelb/Strategical Options/no fix

Then the foot infantry has 12 in defense when it's an indivisible battalion and 14 when you can breakdown the battalion in companies.

And it's even worst for the stock scenarios the unbreakable infantry battalion have a defense of 10.

This is a good scenario, one that I've played quite a few times. It's a lot of fun, lots of action and the strategic options are a nice touch. But even those division rated 12 defense don't hold up very well, and since they are always D and E rated the only thing to do with them is get them to the right place early, and then entrench them in woods or towns. Even then they can't do much except hold for maybe a 12 hours before they are all broken, and they need lots of help. Even the French DLC and DCR motorized divisions, the best the French have, are often soon in trouble with their 14 defense. For example, I had 3 DIM battalions holding high ground in woods. It didn't matter. Three ordinary German battalions just started chewing them up, and since they are C rated, they got assaulted as soon as they disordred and suffered high casualties.I think Volcano Man has the right idea rating everyone 16 on defense. The Germans still have way more firepower and much higher morale. Jonny
