RE: Fire in the East Question
In the Scenario notes it states "PBEM" only, and from a quick flick through the scenario file I can't see any of the settings required for ELMER to function with any cogent intent.
From my (lmited) understanding of the PO, I don't think it would be possible to program it to play this scenario - it is too wide in it's scope.
I think the PO has taken 5+ hours because it is stuck and doesn't know what to do. You will have to find a human opponent, and both be clear about the length of the committment.
I have two games on the go at the moment - one as each side. In one game we are averaging about 3 turns a fortnight, so we have about 4 years to go. I would say that's about right, any more than that and I think you would start to resent the time being spent on it and give up half way through.
In the other game my opponent is just about managing a turn every 3 weeks. That would give us a finish year of about 2031 - I'm not optimistic about that one, I'll be at least drawing my pension by then, if not pushing up the daisies, but we'll see how it goes.
In the most advanced of the games, we are at Turn 50, the other turn 16. I have found the scenario both challenging and entertaining as either side. I feel in the long term the (slight) advantage is with the Soviets, but they are not guaranteed a win. The designers have done an excellent job even if the game engine is stretched to the limits.
