Check the MATRIX website for details about UNCOMMON VALOUR.
It´s different from Warplan Pacific,but belongs to the same series.
Uncommon Valour deals with the battle of Guadalcanal, it´s a very balanced game. Guess UV would be a good introduction to War in the Pacific / Admirals Adition.

Played War Plan Pacific yesterday (demo), fun but I think one would quickly become bored. Trying to find a demo for WiTP but no luck so far.

I am done with SP for now, really tired of it. I have been bitten by the CM bug and am enjoying that, I guess I will have to look into the HPS games too but they look expensive.

Would'nt waste your time or money on UV, WPO or WitP, as WitP/AE is the latest game in this genre with all the newest bells and whistles.

I find that WitP/AE will take me longer than the real war to complete.

Numerous decisions almost every turn/day, such as upgading ships and at which port as capital ships need big shipyards if battle damaged.
Smaller ports and shipyards can help repair most but not always all of the damage and usually at a slower rate.
Making sure your best frontline squadron's get the latest model before some third rate training outfit.
Knowing when to attack, defend or retreat if possible, and make sure your taskforce is capable of loading all your troops on transports for amphibious landings with supplies, plus the escorts of CA's,CL's and DD's to suppress the defenders.
Great game with a steep learning curve, like jumping off a cliff and clawing your way back up the slippery steep face.

But then that's only my opinion.

Sure this forum looks dead but that's because we are all busy enjoying the games.

P.S. When I first read your post I thought your medals were game counters from some PC or boardgame your were seeking.

I bought HPS Midway from NWS Online Store about a month or two ago. They are selling all HPS titles for USD30. Just check under Naval Campaign Series on their website. I am collecting it tomorrow from a relative that brought it with him all the way from Canada as NWS doesn't ship to good old Africa:) From what I understand a few of us can play a battle together by controlling different parts of the forces. In other words two or three players playing as Japs and the same for Allieds. Maybe I'm talking bull but that's what I remember from when I first investigated what the game was about, a few months ago.
Pity to see you leaving SP. Are you planning to drop out of the BSA campaign or are you sticking around to the end?

@Jolly Roger, will keep you informed when I am ready to go on Midway. Would have loved to be in on the October action that you are planning. BTW do you guys also use some voice comms system when playing or just typing messages to other team members? I used to use voice comms a lot while being a flight simmer (IL-2). Used to be part of a virtual squadron so it was important to be able to communicate via voice comms.

Most probably the October battle will be played using the HPS Jutland engine, next battle will be HPS Midway. Gotta persuade the boys from the NCC to purchase HPS Midway...:whis:

We use Hamachi virtual network for online gaming, the programm includes chat functions, but no voice communication.

We use "codes" for communication to provide as much information asap.
For example: 2CL..NNW..10000..23KN...Head..SSE--> S..stop (Moltke)..

Means: Commander of KM Battlecruiser group, flagship SMS Moltke sighted 2 enemy Light Cruisers NNW of own position, distance 1000 yards, heading SSE coming right on course S, Speed 23 KN.

As the enemy has no access to opponents chatroom the code system doesn´t need any changes, but needs training....:)

Thanks all for your responses, great stuff. Still not a fan of buying games untested, I have so many sitting on the shelf that have been played once and sucked (steel beasts, age of sail 2, grand theft auto, medal of honor etc) that I really don't want to waste more cash.

Hamachi works fantastic! I play Pathfinder on Wed nights and one of our players lives 5000km away and using maptools we always had to mess around with the router and setting up port access etc. One night we couldn't connect so I DL'd Hamachi and in 2 minutes we were running and have been since no problems. It is simple to use; the host installs and creates his server calling it what he wants, then Hamachi provides an IP address which the host gives to everyone else along with the password he creates. They type in the IP and PW to their Hamachi install and that is it, connected.
