Scenario of the Month - Dec 2010: Giants on the Vistula
December's scenario, nominated by Larry Reese, is Giant's on the Vistula.
Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us. --Walt Kelly

Ha, I think this should have some vehement pro and con partisans, or at least it used to. Interestingly enough, while I've always like the scenario (except for the random Soviet reinforcements - they're too important to the USSR's chances of victory to allow them to be random - if they're really late, the Sov player is almost guaranteed a loss no matter what they do), I have not played it since EA became available. I think this should slow the German advance down significantly and probably help counteract some of the random reinforcement bias against the Russians.

I played this as Axis as one of the first H2H scenarios against a live opponent. Got my head promptly served on a platter by Ivan, who in a gentleman fashion stopped his troops and gave me a minor loss only cheers

I voted "Liked it somewhat", mostly because I am not a big fan of uber armour. I enjoy the scenarios much more when the tanks can throw a punch, but are still very vulnerable, ala Pz IV, Fireflies, T-34/85s.

It is a true classic, isn't it? Comes with my recommendations as well!

I do not care for these old stock scenarios. They are like cars from the 80's; mostly not worth remembering and hardly ever a classic.
This case is a sort of a poor abstraction of an historical battle. I prefer more accurately researched scenarios.

Generally, I agree with Huib.

I voted Liked Somewhat for nostalgic reasons.

It was one of the scenarios that I played while experiencing PBEM for the first time. Thank you, BobP.

Indeed! Lots of interesting stuff went on, inside those 80's cars, whether calling them classics or not! ;)

Mine were actually quite fast... like my cars now, come to think of it. But then, yes, I agree, this is really a nostalgia scenario from back in the day.

Disagree with Huib. :chin:
This is a good scenario that is fun to play and has many avenues to choose from each time it is played.

But, I also do not care for the majority of "new" scenarios designed for version 1.03/1.04 and can see where they are coming from.

Giants has withstood the test of time for games played? :smoke:

cheers

Actually the really great cars were from the 60's.........the true muscle cars as it were......you know the ones the insurance companies would cancel your coverage when you bought one.......I actually had one 1969 Dodge Coronet RT.....440ci.....dual ignition.....dual 4 barrels.......still haven't figured out how I survived owning it...........nothing like the sound of those twin glasspacks cruising around 110+ on the turnpike.........oh by the way being around for a long time doesn't always equate with being good.......I mean look at the US congress.....been around for 200+ years..............now go ahead and tell me how good it is :-)

VE
PS: Yes my insurance company cancelled my coverage......cost me a fortune to go assigned risk.
