Note: a scenario in testing overwrites an existing one!

b_Exclamation Mark  Note: a scenario in testing overwrites an existing one!
Hey all, just thought I would mention this.

There is a promising scenario in testing called **Aachen-West Wall 1944 that has the same file name as a much smaller scenario called "Aachen's Pall," written by George Busby.

It is therefore impossible to have both scenario's in the scenario list at once.

An easy fix would be for the scenario creator, who I believe Dan Caviness, to rename the files to something like aachen2 or something similar.

Hope this helps someone out.
Thus, what is of supreme importance in war is to attack the enemy's strategy.

RE: Note: a scenario in testing overwrites an existing one!
Hello:

My thanks to Dave Bracken for the email...sorry guys...locked up in my basement as usual...surrounded by PC's and vermin...what was that scurrying sound?....

John...my apologies...I didn't realize this of course and will do what needs to be done to resolve it.

I would ask for some advice/assistance however.
Remember...I'm old...when I grew up alongside Dan'l Boone black powder was more than a game genre...

In the past...whenever I have tried to create Version 2's, etc., it seems as though the modified MAP and OOB files always point to the original SCN file no matter how I try to rename it. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

I'll be happy to rename them "Aachen2".

Will that screw up the test games in progress?
We have one dynamite test going presently and I'd hate to explain to Lord Jim and JB and dawags why they can't keep beating me into a pulp...
I believe there are at least two other test games in progress as well...don't quote me on that...haven't seen daylight for awhile...thanks for calling me out of the basement...

Regards,

Dan

Hi Dan, I didn't realize you were away or else I would have e-mailed you directly about this.

What I would try;

1. Open the map file; slick 'save as' and rename the file (aachen2 for example)

2. Open the OOB file, click 'save as' and rename to the same file name as the map file.

3. Open the SCN file and click 'save as.' Rename the same name as the other 2 files.

4. If you have a picture file included, rename using the procedure as above.

5. The file renaming steps (above) should be done in the order listed!

That *should* work. The only time you have to worry about remaking a whole new SCN file is when you change ANYTHING on the OOB or MAP files. Simply renaming *hopefully* won't cause any problems.

Lets cross our fingers and hope it works ok. I've noticed that some of the newer scenarios have rather 'technical' file names for the most part - most likely to help prevent this kind of glitch. Big Grin

Unfortunately, that won't work.

As soon as you save the ORG and MAP files as something else, the SCN files loses the connectivity to them and will generate errors.

Send me the files and I would be happy to fix them for you.

I thought that didn't work as the original map and org file names are hard coded in the scn file.

again Jason is faster than me...

Thanks guys...great inputs all...once again I shall lean on Jason and his skills...
Jason...if you can get them all lined up as "Aachen2" (no quotes of course) that will be TWO hats I owe you. By the way...the hat is coming...I had some technical difficulties...and I've been busy trying to kill Jim...

Regards,

Dan
Oh...real quick...I should keep those file names on my hard drive until after our current round of testing is completed in H2H....right?

You can alter the .map and .org files as you wish.....the scn file will respond to these. You can save the scen as some other name and change it. What you can't do is change the names of the .map and .org files.

And don't fall into the trap I did. A very large Western Desert desert scen in my action box. Map done, Org, well into putting all the little tanks and guns and troops, mines, trenches, blocks etc into position. Found I had more map than I really needed. So I worked out the sums ...how much to shift, how much to resize. Done . Save, open up scen file...... YAAAAAAAAH!!!!! all the symbols stay fixed to the screen, the map has moved away in two axes underneath them.
Don't believe any history that says Rommel never reached Cairo!!

No problem, Dan.

I can do so as soon as you mail them my way.

RE: Note: a scenario in testing overwrites an existing one!
thanks for the extra info guys - the files have a way of 'relating' to one another - get it wrong and you get file errors! Dan sorry for my erroneous info - I'm still learning.

An interesting summary!

More food for thought! Big Grin

So basically, it looks as if one would be looking at rebuilding your SCN file if you have to change the names, though it sounds like Jason knows a way to update / change them without having to go through the hassle of rebuilding the scn files (whew!). It would have been all my fault if the files had gotten messed up, though I guess Dan could have just redownloaded from the blitz in that case.
