Releasing fixed units

Releasing fixed units
I am having a hard time understanding how to release fixed units. I look at the "Releases" command, and it shows a bunch of my units should have released. An asterisk means they missed their release time, according to the manual. A bunch of my units in the list have an asterisk. Why did they miss their release time? They are just sitting there useless to me. I know they will automatically release when you come in contact with them, but how does the "release" schedule work?

Am I supposed to do something to get them to release on their scheduled time?

Thanks!

RE: Releasing fixed units
Check the % chance of release. In Kharkov '43 we gave many unit's 0% and the first turn of the scenario as a default. The reason for this is that we ONLY wanted them to be released on contact AND it fixed an issue with the scenario editor where it would call out an error if there was no release date set for fixed units.

Hope that makes sense?

RE: Releasing fixed units
Yup, they have a % release chance and when they were checked by the engine failed that % test on the first turn they became available for release, the same check will be done each turn until they are released. ;)

RE: Releasing fixed units
Just to clarify issues on Releasing units and ZERO%

First of all, in most instances, any unit in new scenarios should have a chance of being released. There is a few rare instances where a higher level HQ has been added to a scn to provide a C&C link - but in general, every combat unit should release.

A few versions ago, John Tiller built us an editor function to search a scn for Unreleased units and using this during Kh43 testing, I found a number of cases where a scn had un released Units - which I in turn interpreted as a problem and sent them to the scn designer only to find these units were not released by design. So 0% releases were added to defeat the check feature and as a way for the designer to show this is by design.

It also serves as a reminder down the road to the designer, should he ever be asked about it, that while he not rememeber exactly WHY he did it - but he definately set this up intentionally.

NOTE - this feature and the designers intention might not be in all older games - off hand I am pretty sure there are a number of unreleased FIXED units in some older scn by Wig Graves in T41 for instances.

As an aside, there is also 0% reinforcement arrivals which I won't discuss here, but suffive to say these are OK too.

RE: Releasing fixed units
Least we forget there are game titles where the release percentage in a scenario is 20% or less. These units will take far longer to release if your just plain unlucky.

RE: Releasing fixed units
So, I just want to really understand this.

We're playing #0306_03_XLVIII Panzer Korp battles at Taranovka. I have a bunch of units that were scheduled to all release at 0600 March 6. It is now 2000 March 6. None of them released yet after eight turns, they all have an asterisk, and the release percentage is ??.

What does ?? mean in the release percentage?
Will my units keep rolling to try and release each turn?
Or are they never going to release until coming in contact with the enemy?

RE: Releasing fixed units
Hey Jeff,

The ?? are from playing with FOW, the percent chance of release is hidden from you if you want a surprise. Looking at the scenario with FOW off, I gather you must be the Soviet player. All those units have a 0% chance of release, but with a T meaning the entire formation the release is for will release if any unit in the formation starts the turn with a German unit in LOS, or a couple of other reasons.

So refer back to the first reply, from Strela, as this is K'43. The fixed units will only release when a German unit is in LOS at the start of your turn. Most are reserve formations or HQs and they aren't going to release until the Germans penetrate to their areas.
