Why pentagons instead of hexes?

Why pentagons instead of hexes?
When your army attack from up down of the screen there´s no front for the attacking unit, only flanks. Since the map is divided in pentagons, when your units attack from left to right of the screen there´s front and flanks.

I find it unrealistic, I´d like to know the reason why hexes are not used.

Thanks

Paul uses hexes. There is a display option that will show the hexgrid.
