Okay, gents, this may not be of interest to you, but I wanted to offer it anyway. If any of you are familiar with an old board game called Axis & Allies (it was insanely popular in the 1980s and 1990s) I have found an open source (i.e. FREE) version of essentially the same game system. If anyone is interested, I can send you the files, you can check it out, and if interested we try and get a game underway.
The open source version has been adapted to many other genres too, since there is a great editor system, including WWI and Napoleonic wars, but I can't vouch for those iterations. The original game system was simple, fast, and fun. And surprisingly balanced/realistic with just a few minor modifications. From my review of the open source version, you should be able to get the same kind of mileage from this via LAN/TCP/IP or PBEM play. There was a computer version of the original game in the early 2000s that seemed to play alright, but I have never been able to get it to play exactly right on a Windows 7 machine.
Lastly, here's my other gift to you guys. Here's how you know Christmas is over. BTW, this is NOT me.

If you run, you'll only die tired.
One hand on the wheel, and one in the flame,
One foot on the gas, and one in the grave.
